The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is implementing the final rule on the general industry electrical installation standard. If you or your establishment is in any way involved with the safety aspects of design and installation of electrical equipment in the workplace you should be aware of the updated material in this standard. This final rule will become effective on August 13, 2007 and the implications of the final rule may have an impact on you.
This final rule may apply to your organization in the safety concerns that you should consider as to the advancements in current industry practices. As the current consensus standards from the NFPA and the NEC are years ahead of the OSHA update many organizations are already following their guidelines. Industry is complying with the updated NFPA 70E and the OSHA standards must keep abreast of the current standards. This is an issue that you should be concerned with as this education in the form of standards is there to help protect both your workers health and your business success.
With this edition of OSHA’s electrical standard for general industry it is hoped to provide a means to implement a safer work environment through a means that is easy to understand and put into practice for the average small business to larger corporations. It would be in your best interests to apply the parts of the updated standard that apply to you into your daily practices.
A very important note to be taken is that OSHA believes that there needs to be rules in place that will help reduce the hazard associated with electricity in general industry. Therefore there needs to be put in place changes in the standard that reflect on the recent editions of the NFPA 70E.
