NFPA 70E Compliance

1. What is NFPA 70E and why is compliance with this standard so important?

The National Fire Protection Association 70E Standard is a comprehensive standard that contains detailed instructions on how to protect workers from the heat of electric arc exposures.

2. What job tasks are covered under NFPA 70E?

Examples of employee job tasks that are
covered under NFPA 70E (2000 ed.) include:

• Installing conductors and other electrical
  equipment on industrial substations or
  residential and commercial buildings

• Connecting these installations to a supply
  of electricity

3. What job tasks are not covered under NFPA 70E?

Examples of job tasks not covered under the 2000 Edition of NFPA 70E include installations that occur:

• In ships, watercraft, railway rolling stock,
aircraft, or automotive vehicles other than
  mobile HOMEs and RVs

• In underground mines

• On railways used exclusively for the
  operation of rolling stock

• On communication equipment under
  exclusive control of communication utilities

• Under the exclusive control of electric
utilities for generation, transmission and distribution

4. Are electric utilities covered under NFPA 70E?

No. Currently, NFPA 70E guidelines do not cover the generation, transmission and distribution areas of electrical utilities.

5. How can I protect myself from electric arc threats?

One important way to protect yourself from the heat of electric arc exposures is to wear flame-resistant (FR) protective apparel every day you’re on the job site. Protective apparel of DuPontNOMEX® brand fiber offers superior flame-resistant protection and will not melt and drip or support combustion in the air. In addition, the FR protection provided by NOMEX® thermal technology cannot be compromised by simple laundering.

6. Is protective apparel of NOMEX® comfortable enough to wear every day?

Yes. Protective apparel of NOMEX® balances breathability with excellent thermal protection under flash fire or electric arc exposures. It is also made with finishes that wick perspiration away, which accelerates the cooling process and increases your comfort on the job. And, the lighter weight of NOMEX® garments makes them as comfortable to wear as other work clothes.

7. Does protective apparel of NOMEX® meet NFPA 70E guidelines?

Protective apparel of NOMEX,® which is manufactured in different fabric constructions and weights, is designed for a variety of applications. The following protective apparel offerings of NOMEX® meet the protection levels outlined in NFPA 70E:

• NOMEX® Workwear

NOMEX® Workwear is the toughest protective apparel offering from
DuPont. It provides superior appearance
retention and the longest wear life. It resists chemicals found in industrial work areas and acts as a protective barrier between the wearer and the intense heat and flame that result from flash fires and electric arcs.
