In the electrical industry the threat of electric arc flash exposures has necessitated the use of Indura flame resistant clothing. Flame resistant clothing will minimize burn injury and provide the worker with some protection after being exposed to an electric arc. Whereas, non-flame resistant clothing can ignite and dramatically increase the burn injury percentage and severity well beyond that of the initial arc flash exposure. INDURA Ultra Soft and INDURA will provide far more protection than non-flame resistant garments.
The protective capabilities of INDURA and INDURA Ultra Soft have been tested by thermal instrumented manikins and were conducted at the independent laboratories of The University of Alberta.
Although 3 seconds has been established as the time frame to analyze the performance of secondary protective clothing, additional exposure times in the range of 1.5 to 4 seconds were examined to more completely profile fabric protective performance from electrical arc flash fires. The charts are highlighted up to 3 seconds and below 50% body burn in accordance with NFPA and CGSB standards and definitions. Within these parameters, INDURA Ultra Soft has a protective advantage over Nomex IIIA throughout the entire range of the electrical burn curve. The issue of relevance in comparing secondary protective clothing fabrics above these levels should be carefully considered. If your flash exposure potential is 4 to 5 seconds or produces body burns near to or over 50%, Westex highly recommends protective clothing systems of multiple flame resistant layers or primary protective clothing such as turnout gear.
The manikin tests were conducted segregating categories of “Shirting/Tropical Coverall” and “Pant/Coverall” weights to accurately represent the garments that are commercially available. As the actual exposure to electric arc flash occurrences will change under different situations an electric arc analysis should be performed to determine the exposure to any possible flash situation.
