3M Respirator Cartridges

Basic 3M Respirator cartridge Use

3M respirator cartridge use is briefly stated in this memo. Respirator cartridges from 3M are designed to provide a level of protection for the appropriate exposure if used properly. Always follow the user instructions for 3M cartridge respirators because if the respirators are not properly worn they will not provide the proper respiratory protection.

You will not be protected if you don't wear your respirator correctly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. For dust masks (also called filtering face pieces or "N95" respirators) and other half face piece respirators this means:

The following tips are a brief description of how to wear your 3M respirator cartridges.

  • The respirator is properly positioned over your nose and mouth at all times;
  • The top strap or head harness assembly is positioned high on the back of the head;
  • The lower strap is worn at the back of the neck below the ears;
  • Nothing (beards, head coverings, etc.) passes between the skin of the face and the respirator's sealing edge.
  • Do not take a 3M respirator away from your nose or mouth until you are out of the contaminated area into clean air
  • The top strap or head harness assembly is positioned high on the back of the head;
  • The lower strap is worn at the back of the neck below the ears;
  • Nothing (beards, head coverings, etc.) passes between the skin of the face and the respirator's sealing edge.
When changing respirator cartridges or filters please adhere to the following:

If you are using either a dust mask (also called a filtering facepiece or "N95" respirator) or a rubber or plastic facepiece respirator with replaceable particulate filters (e.g. N95, P100) then:

  • Replace the dust mask or change the particulate filters when you notice:
    • Increased breathing resistance, or
    • Physical damage to any part of the facepiece or filters, or
    • The inside of the dust mask becomes unsanitary, or
    • Time use limitations on the package require replacement.

  • If you are using a half facepiece with replaceable chemical cartridges (e.g. organic vapors, ammonia), the cartridges must be replaced:
    • In accordance with a change schedule, or
    • Earlier, if smell, taste or irritation from the contaminant(s) is detected through the respirator cartridge.

3M Inspection, cleaning and storage procedures for 3M reusable respirator cartridges

Inspection

3MTM 6000 and 7000 Series Respirators must be inspected before each use to ensure good operating condition. The face piece must be repaired or replaced if there are damaged or defective parts. The following inspection procedure is suggested:

1. Check facepiece for cracks, tears and dirt. Be certain facepiece, especially faceseal area, is notdistorted.

2. Examine inhalation valves for signs of distortion, cracking or tearing.

3. Make sure that head straps are intact and have good elasticity.

4. Examine all plastic parts for signs of cracking or fatiguing. Make sure filter gaskets or seal areas are in good condition.

5. Remove exhalation valve cover and examine exhalation valve and valve seat for signs of dirt, distortion, cracking or tearing. Replace exhalation valve cover.

6. Inspect lens of full facepiece for any damage that may impair respirator performance or vision.

Cleaning and Storage Cleaning is recommended after each use. 3MTM Respirator Cleaning Wipes 504 immersing in warm cleaning solution, water temperature not to exceed 120º F (49º C), and scrub with soft brush until clean. Add neutral detergent if necessary. Do not use cleaners containing lanolin or other oils.

4. Rinse in fresh, warm water and air dry in non contaminated atmosphere.

5. Respirator components must be inspected prior to each use. A respirator with any damaged or deteriorated components must be repaired or discarded.
